On Thursday, October 31st, members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) shut down shops owned by Nigerians in five markets in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital. It was the second time this year the association would shut Nigerian-owned shops, claiming it was waging a war on foreigners doing retail business in the country. GUTA says foreign retailers flout section 27 of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act 865, which forbids their involvement in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place must be reserved for Ghanaians.   The law also bans foreigners from operating taxis, beauty salons, selling medicine, production and sale of sachet water, among others. The markets where Nigerian traders were shut out were in Kejetia, Suame Magazine, Adum and Asafo. GUTA Public Relations Officer, Albert Mensah Offei, told Joy FM that the action will soon be extended to other parts of the country. H

Facebook and Instagram have banned aubergine and peach emojis as well as the water drip, for being too ‘sexually suggestive.’ According to the social media giants, the change is part of an update to Facebook’s Sexual Solicitation Community Standards, which are aimed at sex workers who use the platforms to sell their services. The emojis, which are widely known to represent a penis (aubergine), bum (peach), and ejaculation (water drip), will still be allowed in captions, but can no longer be used in a manner that suggests or asks for anything sexual. A councillor representing Kakuri Hausa Ward in Kaduna South Local Government of Kaduna State, Theophilus Madami has been arrested by EFCC for alleged criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N11.08m. The suspect allegedly approached one, Ibrahim Ringim Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of Pyramid Supplied Services Limited, a distributor of pasta products, with claims that his council needed pasta products for distribution to its citizens.   Consequently, the company, sometime in November, 2018, supplied products worth N16.08m to the suspect who paid a deposit of N5m, leaving a balance of N11.080,000.00. After delivery of the goods, he diverted the proceeds his personal use and refused to pay the balance as agreed.   The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.
